MEMBERS' ALLOWANCES SCHEME
(WITH EFFECT FROM 1 APRIL 2007)
- The Chair’s receives a remuneration of £18,052 per annum.
- There is no special responsibility allowance for Committee Chairs.
- Members of the Authority receive a fixed basic allowance rate of £9,026 per annum.
- The remuneration for the lay and independent members of the Standards Committee and Members of the Selection Panel is set at a daily rate of £170.
- A carers’/dependants’ allowance is available as follows:
- A carers’ allowance not exceeding £6.77 per hour should be paid for the care of dependants when a member is attending a meeting or undertaking a Police Authority duty.
- The claim should be made for the period of the meeting plus reasonable travelling time and should be supported by invoices.
- The allowance will only be payable if the care is undertaken by a registered person and not a member of the Members’ family unless they are registered and undertaking care duties professionally.
- The Authority’s Members’ Allowances Scheme is index linked to Police Support Staff Council cost of living increases.
The Police Authority on 23 April 2003 agreed to continue with the current members' allowances scheme, subject to the addition of the following policy:-
- Where a member is suspended because he or she has been found to have breached the Authority's Code of Conduct that member will not receive any allowance whilst suspended from the Authority.

Hotel Accommodation
Hotel accommodation to be booked by the Authority and either:
- paid directly by the Authority; or
- members reimbursed for actual receipted expenditure or given an advance to cover the actual cost of the accommodation.
In exceptional circumstances, a member can reserve hotel accommodation, and will be reimbursed for actual receipted expenditure or given an advance to cover the actual cost of the accommodation.
# A receipt must subsequently be provided for any advances given to cover the actual cost of accommodation.
Subsistence Rates
Day (up to 12 hours) £11.50
Day (over 12 hours/less than 24 hours) £23.00
Overnight (24 hours) £34.50
The above to be up-rated annually in line with inflation.
Meals on trains - Members reimbursed for actual receipted expenditure.
Travel
Rail - First Class
Taxi - Members reimbursed for actual receipted expenditure.
Motor Vehicle
Inland Revenue Approved Rates
Currently for all car sizes
- Up to 10,000 miles - 40 pence per mile
- Over 10,000 miles - 25 pence per mile
Bicycle Rate
20 pence per mile
