Consultation

Northumbria Police Authority has a duty to the people of Northumberland and Tyne and Wear to provide an efficient and effective service.  Our aim is to deliver the policing services that you want.

To enable us to do this, we need to consult with you to help us understand what you expect from the police.

Why do we consult?

We want Northumbria Police to offer you the kind of police service you want. That means getting to know what your views are on local policing, understanding your concerns and shaping future policing priorities to meet those concerns.

We want everyone to have the chance to say what they think Northumbria Police’s priorities should be. So the more people who give us their views, the better your involvement in our consultation process gives you the opportunity to influence how we set policing priorities.
For us to shape policing services to your needs, we need to know what your views are on local policing and understand your concerns. And the more people who give us their views, the better.

When do we consult?

The police authority, in partnership with the Chief Constable, carries out an in-depth consultation process which starts every September.  This means that, when we publish our Local Policing Plans, we can be sure that the priorities we have set for the year ahead deal with the issues you are most concerned about.

What have you told us?

In Autumn 2005 every business and household in Northumberland and Tyne and Wear was sent a leaflet entitled “Your Views Count” and just under 29,000 people returned the questionnaire, their comments will help us and Northumbria Police determine policing priorities for 2006/07 onwards and produce our plans for the future.

This year you told us that your top 5 priorities, across Northumbria are:

  • Responding rapidly to emergency calls/situations
  • Reducing anti-social behaviour by young people
  • Preventing/solving terrorist attacks
  • Reducing drug-related crime/drug availability
  • Solving/reducing violent crime

Also…

During September some have you may have been visited by surveyors from the market research company BMG (market group).  Over 2,500 local people took part and answered an in-depth questionnaire looking at:

  • Neighbourhood issues
  • Experience of crime
  • Police in their neighbourhood
  • Communication and information

We are currently analysing the results for the force area and also your local area.

We would like to say a big ‘Thank you’ to everyone that took part in our surveys.

Keep checking the website for your areas’ priorities and a more detailed breakdown of the results.
