Our Policing Priorities
This year's Local Policing Plan reflects the priorities identified by the Home Secretary and, most importantly, takes full account of the views expressed to us by the community via our consultations with the public.
This year, the Home Secretary identified four key national policing priorities which reflect his aims to reduce crime and the fear of crime, and to tackle criminality and anti-social behaviour. The four priorities for the coming year are to:
- Tackle anti-social behaviour,
- Reduce volume, street, drug-related, violent and gun crime,
- Combat serious and organised crime operating across force boundaries,
- Increase the number of offences brought to justice.
These national priorities closely reflect local concerns. During Autumn 2004, we carried out a major public consultation exercise to find out what people think of the way their area is policed - and which issues you thought should be given a high priority by local police officers. We organised dozens of public meetings, handed out thousands of leaflets and listened to what hundreds of people told us.

What we found was that most people agreed with what we are doing to prevent and reduce crime, though you still had a number of concerns. We listened to what you told us and included measures to deal with your concerns wherever possible.
The priorities identified by local people are:
- Patrolling the streets,
- Drug abuse and drug dealing,
- Violent crime
- Burglary
- Anti-social behaviour and community relations.
Our Local Policing Plan will be carefully monitored throughout the coming year to ensure that Northumbria Police meets the challenging targets set out in the plan. At the end of the year, we will publish a report detailing how well those targets were met.
