Three Year Strategy Plan and Local Policing Plan

On this page we have set out the crime and disorder issues which Northumbria Police will be giving priority to during 2005-06 - our Local Policing Plan.

Every police authority, in partnership with their Chief Constable, is required to issue a plan which details their past and current performance and outlines their future plans. Since 1999, police authorities have also included details of how they intend to achieve Best Value in the exercise of their functions. All of this is included in our Local Policing Plan for 2005-06.

Our Three Year Strategy Plan looks at how Northumbria Police is preparing to meet the challenges of the future. This is also available on this page.

Annual Summary

Our Annual Summary details how Northumbria Police and Northumbria Police Authority are working together to improve services for the people of Tyne and Wear and Northumberland. It details our performance over the past 12 months and outlines our targets for the coming year.

Published in in the summer, this document is delivered to every home in the Northumbria Police area.

Our Policing Priorities

This year's Local Policing Plan reflects the priorities identified by the Home Secretary and, most importantly, takes full account of the views expressed to us by the community via our consultations with the public.

This year, the Home Secretary identified four key national policing priorities which reflect his aims to reduce crime and the fear of crime, and to tackle criminality and anti-social behaviour. The four priorities for the coming year are to:

  • Tackle anti-social behaviour,
  • Reduce volume, street, drug-related, violent and gun crime,
  • Combat serious and organised crime operating across force boundaries,
  • Increase the number of offences brought to justice.

These national priorities closely reflect local concerns. During Autumn 2004, we carried out a major public consultation exercise to find out what people think of the way their area is policed - and which issues you thought should be given a high priority by local police officers. We organised dozens of public meetings, handed out thousands of leaflets and listened to what hundreds of people told us.

What we found was that most people agreed with what we are doing to prevent and reduce crime, though you still had a number of concerns. We listened to what you told us and included measures to deal with your concerns wherever possible.

The priorities identified by local people are:

  • Patrolling the streets,
  • Drug abuse and drug dealing,
  • Violent crime
  • Burglary
  • Anti-social behaviour and community relations.

Our Local Policing Plan will be carefully monitored throughout the coming year to ensure that Northumbria Police meets the challenging targets set out in the plan. At the end of the year, we will publish a report detailing how well those targets were met.
