What is diversity?
Diversity means difference – difference across race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, faith and age. It is the recognition that not all people are the same and the people have different, equally valuable skills, experience and knowledge to offer.
Our responsibility
As a police authority we have a responsibility to eliminate discrimination and promote good relations between the different groups in our communities and ourselves. This is not just a moral duty, but directly impacts the quality of service we provide to you.
The more closely we reflect the communities of Northumbria, the more effectively we can do our job and ensure that all people living in, working in and visiting Northumbria have a police service in which they have trust and confidence and promotes and protects their safety.
In order to provide you with an excellent service we need to:
- treat everyone with fairness and respect;
- acknowledge that different people have different needs; and
- ensure our workforce and Northumbria Police’s workforce reflects the communities in Northumbria.
By effectively promoting diversity will aim to:
- develop better relationships with our communities;
- gain greater co-operation from our communities; and
- secure a further reduction in crime.
